Things are fine. But the leaves are turning and the elk are bugling and I know that soon, my Special Place will be buried in snow and inaccessible for months. So, after half a day at the library, I came home and grabbed a few things and up the mountain I drove. The eagerness in Bravo’s face was reflected in me… the air, the quiet, the stillness… we love them!

I find myself whispering to myself and the dogs when I’m there. It’s not that I’ll bother anyone and no elk slipped through the trees and the cows don’t care… but it seems appropriate.

A good book, a simple meal, a tiny fire in the woodstove to drive away the chill… makes for a perfect night.
There is no cell service, no internet, no electronic distractions so when I’m there, I can’t be here. So when I’m absent here, envision me there… surrounded by silence.

Silence is a profound and multifaceted phenomenon that transcends mere absence of sound. It can serve as a space for introspection, allowing individuals to connect with their thoughts and emotions on a deeper level. In communication, silence often speaks volumes, conveying respect, contemplation, or even discomfort. In nature, it fosters a sense of tranquility and harmony, offering a respite from the cacophony of modern life. Culturally and spiritually, silence is revered as a pathway to clarity, mindfulness, and connection with the divine. Yet, it can also be unsettling, highlighting loneliness or tension in its void. Ultimately, silence is a powerful tool, capable of healing, revealing, and transforming, depending on how it is embraced or interpreted

The only thing that should break that silence is the bugle of a big bull elk and the sound of pages of a book being turned .
