Colorful Metaphor Time

Posted on July 11, 2026July 11, 2026

Sorry about not posting… for those of you who missed my Facebook posts as well…

GoDaddy suspended my account with two days notice. I thought the email was spam or ransomware. So I called and after an hour of holding, I hung up. The next morning (today) I called again. After 45 minutes on hold, the guy was researching my account, lost the call, and didn’t call back. After 30 minutes on hold, I got a new guy who passed me off to a woman, who helped -but not really.

I admit, I don’t understand this stuff, but my backup is too large (after 20 years of Rimrock English Shepherds and Red Dirt that’s no surprise), but I thought I paid GoDaddy to backup my blog. Anyway, I have to hire a web developer to go in and “cleanup” my blog and down load a backup to my computer or somewhere. If I don’t get this done by the 17th ( that’s six days, folks… and tomorrow is Sunday) GoDaddy will suspend my account once again. If clearing out my backups and whatever isn’t enough, I will have to delete old content.

I can’t tell you how happy this made me.

The lady assured me, it’s no big deal. Just hire someone, they’ll know what to do.

After utilizing some colorful metaphors, my plan is this: Monday morning look for and hire some web developer somewhere and give him access to my blog and have him start cleaning it up, whatever magic wand works…. At the same time, decide on a new book printer since my last one went out of business and print off my blog into books. I may be two and a half years behind, plus see if I can get “the early years” printed off as well. I started this journal for my kids, so there will be a hard copy for them to read at some point in their lives. If I can keep GoDaddy happy enough and print off my books, that’ll make me happy too. Then, I don’t know.

I’m not real happy about paying a web developer AND GoDaddy. If I clean up Red Dirt and back it up to my computer… do I just stop there? Will I be able to add new content without getting rid of old content? Do I start a new blog and will it come with more room? Then I’m paying a web developer and two GoDaddy accounts? I wish I understood this better. We will just have to see what shakes out.

Fair warning… if I don’t get my act together, I guess my account will get suspended again. And, of course, we are traveling to Washington DC this week to collect our library national award. My “rancher in DC” content may not make it to Red Dirt! Time will tell.

A web developer will know best, of course, but my instinct would be to buy a couple of external hard drives and have a copy backed up to each of them; put one in a safe deposit box at the bank and keep the other at home to access old content when you need it. I hope you can quickly put this in the hands of someone who can take care of it quickly and competently, so you can enjoy your trip to accept the Ten Sleep Library’s award.
