Juniper War

Posted on October 20, 2026October 20, 2026

As you trail cattle along, it can get a little boring. Sure, you need to keep an eye on where they’re going, but with a small herd and easy trail… your mind can wander. Years ago at Girl Scout camp, we’d play two games to liven things up. Since we don’t ride in single file, “pass the stick” isn’t doable. However, Juniper Wars definitely is!

Juniper bushes often have berries on them. Infamous for flavoring gin, the berries can also be ammo. As you ride by, reach over and grab a handful.

Now, as you mature, lobbing one towards someone’s cowboy hat is great fun. They create quite the “plink” when they hit. Then an innocent look is employed and cowboys chalk it up to imagination. It is quite difficult to hit someone’s hat on the sly while riding by each other.

However, with younger kids, the “shotgun” method is usually employed. A handful of berries is often thrown at a time. Distance and accuracy is lacking. Stealth mode is nonexistent. Giggles and yelling are standard. When you’re a passenger in a side by side, escape is impossible when retribution comes. Megan and Lorelei laughingly launch berries at Reagan who has been instigating Juniper Wars for the past mile. My side by side now has little berries rolling around everywhere… and the past two miles went by swiftly… a win for everyone!
