Coming Down

Posted on October 27, 2026October 27, 2026

We tried something we’ve never had to before. Every year around Halloween, we’ve brought our cows off the Mesa Pasture. Hopefully, before our first snowstorm. Due to drought, the pasture we’d normally use are looking bad. We decided to leave some cows on the Mesa.

Weren’t the clouds great?

I stayed behind to guard the gate from the unhappy cows left behind. They are creatures of habit, knowing they’re supposed to go home… but they should be happy with all that feed in their pasture.

I had to walk them up the hill out of sight of the departing herd TWICE. By the time I left them, the cowboys had gotten so far ahead, I drove clear around to meet the lead coming out onto the highway.

Carol, Wyoming rancher

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
