Sage Chickens

Posted on March 24, 2018

One of the signs of spring here in Wyoming, is the strutting of sage chickens.  When we first moved to Wyoming, I remember my dad waking me up before daylight, and driving miles out of Casper to a strutting ground, also called a lek.  As the sky turned, the males appear, puffing out their chest sacs, creating a drumming sound to attract females.  My dad told me, “You aren’t a kid from Wyoming until you’ve seen this happen!”  Well, I was turned into a Wyoming kid early… and I love seeing this every year.

Fortunately, I now live close to a lek, so I don’t have far to drive to watch them drum.  As I drove out, I glanced over my shoulder and spied an early morning rainbow!  Perfect timing!

Enjoy my little minute movie…

It was interesting to see that sage chicken all puffed up and strutting around. I think he will be very attractive to the gal chicks around him! Thanks for that video. I loved seeing it.

Birds!! Can’t get enough of them. I loved how at one point there where shadows on his body from his tail feathers. Loved it.

Enjoyed this, too. And his tail feathers are quite notable!
