We had some time to do something, so Vernon asked if I’d like to go for a drive.
“Sure!”
“Wanna go look at some dead grass and snow?”
I mean, seriously? How could a girl resist an invitation like that? Yes, I’d like to go see some dead grass and snow, how far up the mountain can we go?
We took off in the side by side, retracing our summer trail. Up past Aunt Mary’s Hill, past D’s turnoff, past Aunt Wyoma’s Homestead. This is not good. It’s February. We should MAYBE make it partway up Aunt Mary’s Hill if snowmobiles had packed a trail. But there’s practically no snow. We keep driving… past P.’s cabin… past Hammer Creek, past Little Hammer, still minimal snow. Up around the corner past Bobby’s sheep corral is the first drift but it is easily bypassed. Good grief, there should be snow everywhere.
We keep driving. We make it to the forks and decide we should make the wise choice and turn around. There’s just enough drifting to block the road and create difficulties. We stop and I take my obligatory dead grass and snow photo.

We know there’s time… that most of our snow comes in the spring, but, holy cow, I’d love to see less dead grass and more snow!
