Vernon asked for some help and I readily agreed. The weather was gorgeous and how could I pass it up? The object was to check the water in the badlands. All of our water tanks in our badlands allotments have their origin at this spring on private land. Johnny Greet and Ped Mills and others put in the waterline about the time I arrived in 1981. We have to work at keeping it going, but it’s still easier than the original build.

Yeah, no. That’s a bad look for pipelines. We’d have to do something about that, but where is the pipeline? Vernon watched, focusing on the water. Hmmmmmmmm…
He continued to check the other “cans”.

A “can” for a spring is basically a collection device. As the water seeps through the dirt, it will find the path of least resistance and collect in the “can”.

Then, with the inserted pipeline, the water builds up and then flows out.
We checked on a few other things, then headed for home. Vernon contemplated. And debated. And he drove back out to look at it again. Where was the pipeline break? Where was the old can? He remembered two lines from two cans. I don’t remember anything except I found an arrowhead out here! We’d find out more things the next day… sorta.
