My taste in dogs doesn’t refer to dogs as menu items… but rather what appeals to me.
Well, duh…
English Shepherds have the personality I want.
Mine are mild mannered, laid back, intelligent, Loyal (with the capital L), and great working partners.
Just like my horse…
I want a mellow horse that will stand still, not swish his tail, not shake his head, and not stomp…
be relaxed…
but *move* when we have work to do.
I’d never own a warm blood horse like the great Big Ben (owned by Ian Millar) but I sure loved to watch him do his stuff.
I’d never own a Border Collie but I still like to watch them do their stuff!
Today I went over the Big Horn Mountains to Kaycee, Wyoming to watch the Kaycee Challenge… a sheep festival and dog trial.
I took *many* photos and video… and I’ll have to sort them out for future posts.
Let me reiterate my story so far…
The difference between a Border Collie and an English Shepherd…
case in point…
Both dogs were in the corral and told to “get out” and “lay down” as we worked cows yesterday.
Here’s Johnny’s new Border Collie dog “Sam” from Lisa Cunningham of Kaycee, Wyoming… well known in her own right.
He’s on.
He’s ready to go.
He never quit watching.
He is waiting for a chance to zip out and save the world.
On the other hand…
if my dog is told his help isn’t needed and to get out and go lay down…
Then you see this…
Five feet away from Sam was Lucas.
He was off…
an ear was cocked waiting for the “word” from me…
but he didn’t try to sneak in the corral…
or influence what was going on inside the corral…
I had told him *no* and he believed me!
That’s why I like English Shepherds.
But I still liked going to the Kaycee Challenge…
I liked the sheep and goats and llamas and alpacas they had on display…
I liked the sheepwagons…
I liked the bagpiper…
I liked the emcee…
I liked talking to “dog people”…
They were easy to find…
for some reason…
Tomorrow… the trial!
