Weaning

Posted on October 10, 2019October 10, 2019

We weaned our last bunch before this storm. The basic idea is simply to separate mommas cows from calves. People have creative ways to do it, but we’re pretty simple and old school around here. Sorting here is done on foot. Riding horses and sorting cattle works for some people, but if you don’t do…

Not So Calm Before the Storm

Posted on October 8, 2019October 8, 2019

The cows have been gathered (in the snow), and brought down to the Mesa pasture. Our other, smaller bunch is midway between the top and the Mesa. Today we weaned their calves off of them, and tomorrow we had planned to preg test them. There’s a large area of Wyoming covered by a winter storm…

Replacements

Posted on October 6, 2019October 6, 2019

Over a few days, they flocked overhead, sailing on tipped wing in circles above my house. It was perfect for a Halloween movie. Vultures. Cemetery. Eerie music. Well, I only had the turkey vultures and a little roadkilled buck by the highway! They filled this tree. They roosted in their usual cottonwood. Flapping wings and…

#TBT: Exertional Rhabdomyolysis, v.2.0

Posted on October 3, 2019October 3, 2019

THIS WAS FIRST POSTED OCTOBER 3, 2008. HONESTLY, ONE OF THE WORST DAYS I EVER HAD. Sounds yucky, huh?  Well, I can attest with my hand over my heart, tears in my eyes, and a sinking heart, that it is much more than yucky to witness.  What is it?  Basically it is when your dog…

Wean Weight

Posted on October 1, 2019October 1, 2019

For the past couple of days we’ve weighed our weaned calves. Now that they’re all settled down, quiet, and almost ready to be turned into a field to continue eating undisturbed for a while… we grab their ‘wean weight’. As babies at their mommas’ sides, they’ve learned how to be a cow… where to go,…

Buck Video

Posted on September 30, 2019September 30, 2019

I took Quinlan fishing a few weeks ago… first cast, I hang up my lure on a creekside branch. No problem, I came dressed thinking I’d have to rescue Quinlan’s lure… so I wade out… The high water this spring changed the creek bed a bit, and it was deeper than I remembered. Yank. Yank….
