Spring Chore

Posted on June 11, 2024

Spring chores include putting up our lay down fence on the mountain. These stretches of lay down fence are along the stock drive road. We put them up first since people are taking their livestock up along these stock drives. The fences are put up in a unique way. Remove the nail and shove the…

Impressive Adventure

Posted on June 10, 2024

Reminiscing XXVIII

Posted on June 7, 2024

This story is from James Greet, written in 1991 about his life as a cowboy in the 1940’s. The following is a postscript to the first part of my memories about Christmas at Grandma and Granddad Pyle’s, and other Christmases at the ranch when I was a little kid. Also something about the places and times…

Throwback Thursday: Wrecks, v.2.0

Posted on June 6, 2024

This was, unfortunately, a very memorable day. It was first published June 3, 2014. Yesterday started off with Lucas not avoiding a pickup tire.  As soon as I saw it start happening, I closed my eyes, not wanting to see his demise.  Well, after a long trip to the vet (where you have an hour…

Won’t Care

Posted on June 4, 2024

It was a neck-jarring, teeth-rattling, iron-wheels-on-cobblestone type drive. The good thing about rain is … well, rain… the bad thing? Rain becomes mud and muddy roads walked on by cattle become the absolutely roughest roads you can drive on. Your muscles get tired from the constant tension from trying to hold yourself together mile after…

Green

Posted on June 3, 2024

Heifers are back from their winter home. With luck and the expertise of Daniel and Brandon, they are also pregnant. We unloaded the three trucks and they soon were on their way to green grass. The heifers were soon munching happily away.

Benefits

Posted on June 2, 2024

While the rest of the crew has been very busy AI-ing our heifers over in Worland… Vernon and I have remained at home, he, trying to finish up the last of the pipeline troubles, me, putting in a garden and watching kids. It seems very strange to not be in the middle of things. It…
