Gorgeous Country

Posted on April 8, 2014

It was unexpected… the sudden switch from high mountain plains to moist Pacific forest.  The trip started as expected, Montana sharing her Big Sky and rimrock views.

Montana rimrockIt took a short tour through sadness and random luck created by last year’s forest fires just outside Lolo, Montana.  Most houses were right at the edge of the fire, but there were a few where only the chimney was left.

Lolo FireIdaho welcomed us with cold outstretched arms at Lolo Pass.

Lolo PassThen, BAM!  Is that MOSS, really?, MOSS in these pine trees????

mossHoly cow… we were in the rainforest just descending from the pass.  Moss and lichen covered everything!  What would be bare granite in Wyoming or Montana was a soft carpet of green.  The Lochsa River was wide and pretty and we ran in tandem with it for the next 100 miles almost to the little town of Kooskia.  The map of Highway 12 resembles the arthritic penmanship of a centenarian… and SLOW is the preferable speed.

Lochsa RiverRight before Kooskia, we took a road to climb our way out of the canyon.  Our effort was rewarded with a rainbow right on the ground…

rainbowWe were sure.  Idaho is gorgeous country!

Its like you read my mind! You appear to know a lot about this, like you wrote the book in it or something.
I think that you can do with some pics to drive the message home a little bit, but
instead of that, this is wonderful blog. A great read. I will certainly be
    back.

So I’m guessing you were headed for Grangeville. There’s not much other reason to take a left at Kooskia.

I’ve never been to Montana or Idaho. Thanks for this beautiful collage
of photos. And I have never seen a rainbow so close to the ground in
that low arch, either. Neat. 🙂

Actually, those are all lichens in the trees. And 40 or 45 mph will get you all the way down the Lochsa without much braking, and time to enjoy the scenery. 🙂
