Cowboyed Up

Posted on April 23, 2017

The rain continued this morning, but was predicted to clear, so we finally cowboyed up, saddled up, and began to work cows.

We’re putting cattle out onto our BLM allotment.  (That does NOT mean Black Lives Matter, it means Bureau of Land Management.  Seeing “BLM” in headlines lately gets me confused!  I get confused easily!)

To do this, in theory, is a simple process.  Find the momma cow, find her baby, MAKE SURE THEY FIND EACH OTHER, then trail them miles to your allotment… find the momma cow, find her baby, MAKE SURE THEY FIND EACH OTHER, and turn them loose to eat grass!

First, we pair them out of their pasture… where it’s easy for me to take photos!  My position is Gate Watcher.  Those that are going out, need to go the right direction and not get stuck in the corner pen… Those that are out, need to stay out. Those that aren’t paired must be turned back.

pairBrandon brings a pair.  Do you think he knows I’m there with a camera?

TuffTuff minds his manners and stays out of the way.

tickSitting there also gives me the wonderful chance to pull ticks out of my horse’s mane.  This, even after we dosed them with anti-tick stuff!  yeesh.

I didn’t take any photos of us trailing the bunch… too many chances to lose control and have calves run back and end up with a wreck…

But we got there, rather uneventfully… and paired them into this first pasture.  Tomorrow is the all day trail to another pasture.  Tomorrow is another day.

Great BLM comment. I’m also easily confused, especially these days. Once again, gorgeous color in those pictures.

Loved the BLM comment. I give my horses sulfur salt. Sure seems to work well.
