This is how it’s done on the Greet Ranch.

We pair momma cows and their babies everywhere we go… If they lose each other, they will return to the last place they saw each other… and if that’s in a different pasture a few miles away, believe me, they will get there!  So, we ease them from out of the herd TOGETHER.

Daniel shows how it’s done, though Zip seemed to be irritated at something there for a minute.  We will write their number down, or rather, Brandon will enter it into his cow program on his iPhone, and we’ll kick them out the gate.  Baby calves are notorious for not following momma very well, so you have to be alert for a change of direction!

Once we have them to their new pasture… we do it again.

HERE YOU ARE.  HERE IS YOUR NEW PASTURE.  HERE IS YOUR BABY. DON’T FORGET IT AS YOU GO TO EATING THE FRESH GREEN GRASS!

  1. Niiice. Mommas happy, calves happy. Humans also happy, I’m sure–at least once the saddle has stopped hurting…? (see 04-16-11 ;-))
Thanks for the great little video!
Is Zip a new(er) horse on the Ranch?
