I know you missed branding… and all those photos. Well, maybe I just missed sharing all the photos! As usual, I took as many as I could while working, it’s difficult to run a brand on each calf and still try to set up some good photos.
But, I got hot, over heated, actually, towards the end… so instead of just powering through like I normally would have, I just let Brandon brand for me… and enjoyed taking a few shots.
Some people might not have chosen this photo… but I like it because it has everything in it… Vernon carrying a branding iron, the girls waiting their turn to vaccinate, a roper horseback, the wrestlers just setting a calf down into position, and a concerned mama cow waiting for her baby.
B.’s grey horse took exception to something and gave us some excitement for a bit. Luckily, it went out and away from the branding crew… I couldn’t get my camera out fast enough! J. rode his horse out there to calm the grey… and be there to help in any way possible. I know B. wasn’t happy, but for me, it was a chance to take a few quick shots to harass B. with when he regains his sense of humor about the whole thing!
This one is sooooo close to perfect, at least to me. C. is riding Daniel’s horse, Zip, and riding Daniel’s saddle. I think he only missed three times the whole time he was roping. C. is GOOD. I had been trying to get a rear shot with those magnificent clouds in the background… and if I’d managed to get the calves’ feet in there, and if the loop was just a smidge more centered, I’d be super thrilled…
I don’t know C., this is the first time I’ve met him… but he did give me the quintessential cowboy photo with that cloud and I *had* to make it black and white!

Thank you for sharing with us what a branding is like through your photos and your narrative. It looks like very hard work and many specialized skills needed to do it. I appreciate getting to “watch” it and learn how it’s done. Congratulations to everyone. Wowee!!
I have loved seeing and reading about your brandings. It is obviously very hard work and work that demands a lot of specific skills and stamina. It is wonderful for you to share it with us so we can see what it is like and get to appreciate what goes on at a branding. Wowee!
I love the rich stories you tell with your photos and a few words! I can almost fill in the scene smells and sounds and more.
OOOOOH, good! I love these kind of comments!!!!
All are awesome, but B’s grey horse is my favorite, I’d love to hear Baxter Black describe what is about to happen-
All are great, but my favorite is the grey horse just ready to bust in half & head over the moon!
Yes. I agree with other comments. The B&W photo is amazing. So restful just looking at it. I do like the colour one above with the rope outlined against the clouds. That’s more an action shot.
I agree. I Love the black and white. So simple, but speaks volumes.
The black & white photos to me are the best. It makes the person viewing use their imagination!
