It seems like every day has a beginning around cow work. Temperatures have been rising, so an early start is preferable! The other day we shipped our steers. The buyer has bought them before. He’s down in Nebraska.
We begin by weighing them because we said they’d weigh 825 ponds when we sold them. We weigh them in small groupings of 8-12. We then just take the average. The truckers also have to know the weights so they can adjust for their trucks.
I would have sworn they were going to be light… every bunch of 10 steers would weigh close to 8000, and I really didn’t think they’d make it to 825. They did, averaging 830.
After weighing, the trucks back up to the loading chute and call for the number of steers they need to fill each pen on the double decker semi’s.
Three generations move them along, working them down the alley for the last time.
Finally, the paperwork gets the attention it needs… calculating weights, shrink, commission, all of the goodies it takes to sell livestock.
Paperwork is shared… Handshakes all around… and over a year’s worth of work actually pays off.
