I was going to babysit Jaxon, Lacee, and Reagan… and we had zipped over to Megan’s house to pick them up from her round of babysitting. We had just jumped in the side by side for the quick journey. Back at our gate, Vernon helped unload the older kids and while I adjusted Reagan in my arms, I looked out over the pivot field.
“Uh, Vernon… smoke.”
He squinted. He sighed.
“Better go start calling…”
He went in to change into Nomex clothes and call Brandon. As I settled the three kids, I grabbed my index card with neighbors’ phone numbers… and I started dialing.
This smoke was close enough, had I not had the kids, I probably would have driven down to see where exactly it was.
It turned out to be in the junipers and only covered one or two acres. It wasn’t difficult to put out, just difficult to get to! They called in a helicopter and spotter plane.

Brandon had good pictures of the fire event, hope this is the only fire for you, my older daughter lives in the woods in Ca. there have been several fires close to here in the last couple years, two happen when I was out there, scary! Back to cabs, I operated a backhoe with a cab for many years, had a heater, but no AC, and yes, they do get hot in side, I wasn’t in dust, so I could leave the door & back window open, but in the winter it was nice & warm!
