A bit more work on the new sheds…

Once we’d had a good look at our new little additions to our calving shed, we noticed some difficulties. The gates were shorter than we expected. We quickly decided that a riled heifer could attempt an escape over the low gate. Now, granted, most of our heifers don’t get riled, but all it would take would be *one* that would decide she didn’t want to be in a pen, by golly, and this whole “birthing thing” didn’t sound like fun either… the pens would have to have some height added to them.

The cross pieces were wider apart as well… a heifer could try to squeeze through whatever she could get her head into… she wouldn’t fit, but she could try. Plus, newborn calves could roll out through the gap… and believe it or not, it’s happened before.

Brandon started modifications.

It was not the fault of the builder, we just didn’t envision the pen details as well as we should have. The pens now have higher gates, and “cattle panels” will prevent a head from going through or a calf from sliding under.

It’s all in the details….
