Working cows the other day, we kept a lookout for sick or injured girls. We found a few… a festered lump caused by a grass seed getting under the skin… a tender footed cow with no real visible sign of injury… and one cow with pinkeye. Pinkeye is something we usually see in summer when grass or dust gets into an eye and irritates it. It can happen year round, obviously, and this girl had an advanced case.
Just like humans, something in your eye is painful. Weeping of the eye and closure is often part of the deal. The infection can run its course in a couple of weeks. To help it heal, we’ll treat it the pirate way… and give her an eyepatch.
A patch is glued over her eye, keeping the bright sunlight out of her eye.It is slightly coned to keep it away from the eyeball. By the time the glue releases, her eye will be healed. There is an area at the bottom that doesn’t have glue on it, leaving it open to any drainage. She may not be thrilled with us right now, but she’ll get over it.
