Ledger Art

Posted on January 28, 2022January 28, 2022

While my accomplishments today involved my vacuum and cleaning rags, that simple repeated and temporary chore of cleaning…blech… I’m excited for tomorrow!

The Ten Sleep Library has received a grant from Lifetime Arts for an art workshop for those aged 55 and older. Our artist of choice is Robert Martinez from Riverton. Known for his contemporary ledger art, Mr. Martinez has gained many awards and recognitions.

Ledger art began in the 1800’s when Plains Indians first used paper to tell their pictorial history. Paper torn from ledger books and simple colored pencil were the medium. The tumultuous conflicts with cavalry, raids upon enemies, buffalo hunts, and simple tipi life were all depicted.

We will learn the history of ledger art. We will UN-learn the western ideas of art such as perspective and shading. We will learn the differences and continued methods of contemporary ledger art, such as Mr. Martinez now makes. We will make meaningful artwork with ledger paper that may have personal significance. We will have an art show after our four classes conclude. We are gonna be great!

This is gonna be awesome!

Sounds really interesting and different. So Ten Sleep has a senior citizen program?

That is so interesting and wonderful that your library can bring this to the public. Wish I could attend!
