Sometimes I can really embarrass myself. Wednesday morning, in preparation for a day at the library, I went over in my head some of my plans for the day. I knew Thursday and Friday would be the Wyoming Library Association’s meeting in Casper. I had laid out some wooden spoons to wood burn at the last minute to add to a gift basket we were donating to a fundraiser. What occupied most of my thoughts, was a teaching plan for the Junior Class. They were coming to the library at 10:30 to learn how to do research with the databases.
I drive to town, open up the library, and start the morning procedures. That finished, I started an outline for my teaching. My boss arrives. We visit a smidge. A bit later, my co-worker arrives to start her shift. She mentions how she’s all packed. My boss says she isn’t actually packed, but it’s all layed out on her bed. I look at them puzzled. ”I’m not packed”, I chirp. They stare at me. ”Why not?” ”I just thought I’d do it after I got home.”
“No, Carol. We’re closing at noon and leaving for the conference TODAY.”
Oh, they laughed when I realized my mistake. It was a stupid mistake and I definitely should have known better, but there I was… There would definitely be no wood burning in my evening, I’d be in Casper!
I text Vernon to update him of my mistake, and start worrying about my teaching plan.
I know the Junior Class is interviewing veterans for their class project. Supplemental information is needed to round out their information. I pick a few examples from World War II… browsing through some database topics… did you know some Prisoners of War were allowed to send home postcards from concentration camps? Me, either! I’m thinking this is so interesting even if the postcards are written in German. Even I could figure out the “Dear Mother”…
“Here they come.”
“What? They aren’t supposed to be here for another hour!”
Well, great. I take them back and get started on the database tutorial. Thankfully, I’ve done it enough times that I can give them the introductory class with no problem.
Before I know it, I fly home and start throwing clothes in my bag. I’m happy hotels now have irons and ironing boards in them! Jewelry. Toiletries. Jacket. Wallet. Sweet! I’m packed before my boss even arrives to pick me up!
I may have crammed a hat on my head as I ran around like a crazy person… but, I’m there! We’re off.
We prefer to take the back gravel and dirt road… until.
Yup. Flat tire. Where’s all the traffic we were just commenting on? Nowhere in sight until I was tightening the lug nuts on the stupid donut they give you for a spare tire. Then two neighbors stopped to help. We limped back to my house and grabbed my Jeep.
Once again we head out, this time with me in the driver’s seat.
We keep our fingers crossed, enjoy the scenery and wildlife (the elks’ photo I’ve already posted), and we managed to laugh and chat the entire way to Casper. Always an adventure…
Find me here!
What else can you do but laugh? You had too many things to think about all at once to keep them separated. And you got to see elk.
What an adventure you both had and that was before you got to Casper. My daughter and I stayed at a Best Western in Casper in 2009 on our way to Jackson Hole. Amazing scenery.
Great to see your smiling faces! Nothing two old friends can’t overcome together!
Miss you both
Have a great time! Good to see BOTH of your smiling faces. Hi to KJ.
You two look gleeful, in spite of your tribulations. Ha!
Always good to take things in stride! Aren’t you glad it wasn’t raining when you had to change the tire?!
