Way back when, I wrote about looking for some fossil plants out on Big Cedar Ridge. Well, today I returned, but this time with Lorelei and Lacee’s fourth grade class.
We had the BLM archaeologist along and me. I only know what I’ve read, since I’m an archaeologist and not a paleontologist. It was enough to get by the fourth grade class…
The layers of volcanic ash covered a jungle full of palmettos, conifers, and flowering plants. Bits and pieces of leaves can be found in almost whatever rock you can find.
Buckets of treasures were hauled off the bentonite covered hill.
Treasures were discussed and wrapped.
Lunch in the shade of the bus ended the fun day of hiking and climbing and digging and ooh-ahhhing.
While the kids at home might be surrounded by volcanic ash without them realizing it, Big Cedar Ridge brought it into focus. I need to go back! I think I said that last time I wrote about it!
Find me here!
A great experience for those 4th graders.
Thanks for taking us there by photo. What an ideal place for the kids
to find a lot of fossils. I like the pic of the hill with the grey layers – good
for some climbing.
What a cool trip and place to explore!
