Good Setup

Posted on December 24, 2023

Yes, there’s snow on the ground, and I spent the day cooking.
Yesterday, though, I took pics of a new piece of equipment…

This is our new maternity pen for cows. Betchya never heard of these! When cows need help calving for whatever reason… large calf, breech presentation, or whatever, we can use this setup to keep her, and us, safe while we work with her. This is the entry way, though I have the gate swung all the way inward.

The gate is opened, and the cow walks in. The gate is swung inward, positioning her in the chute where we can catch her head, if necessary.

This is from the chute side. Both sides can be split and opened… maybe a calf needs help sucking or a c-section needs performed… you have good access.

The back can be opened, too, for those calves that need a puller.
It’s quite a good setup as far as we can tell. We will find out in a few months!

Let’s hope you don’t need it too often, but great to have when you need it.
