Jaxon, Lacee, Reagan and I made a mad dash to the trampoline last night after a ranch meeting. This is the height of the Perseid meteor showers and we were determined to see one before they headed home. Snuggled under a blanket, I took them through the ancient story again. Who was Cássiópeia? Queen of Ethiopia. Who was her husband? Cepheus. Who was their daughter? Andromeda. As punishment to Cássiópeia for believing she and Andromeda were prettier than the goddesses, half of the year, Cássiópeia’s head is below the horizon, in the sea, if you lived in Greece. Andromeda’s punishment was that she’d be chained to a rock where the sea monster / whale, Cetus, could devour her. She was rescued by Perseus, who some say was riding Pegasus.
That story covers many of the constellations in the Northern Sky.
The kids and I saw four meteorites before they had to leave. I drug out my big heavy sleeping bag to the trampoline and covered myself with my buffalo robe. Shooting stars kept appearing and so did the Northern Lights.
As I lay on the trampoline, I shot this with my iPhone. Three second exposure. I have kept putting my solar light in the tipi for a glowing, campfire effect. I lost track of how many meteorites I saw. I would fall asleep, then Indy would bark, and I’d awake… to count more stars as they fell in the painted sky…
