Finally

Posted on October 5, 2024

While my knee continues to improve slightly, I’m not supposed to put much weight on it. Sitting here in the house is definitely not my style, so Vernon was kind enough to take me up in the side by side to do a water check in our Mesa Pasture. Finally! I mean, I have gone to town a few times, but, honestly, trips to town don’t count. I need the trips to see water projects or cows or fencing or just SEE. I do need that red dirt in my soul…. And, oh, by the way, it was the slowest drive Vernon has EVER taken to the Mesa. He was very considerate of bumps! It wasn’t the going up and down either, it was more of the tilting that I could feel. And I didn’t have to open the gates!

He’s marking the water level in a tank as I sit comfortably in the side by side.
Onward we go, happy to see water to the tops of the troughs.

We are brittle dry here and paranoid about fire. There’s no rain or snow in the forecast and it would help Wyoming so much right now.
The Fish Creek Fire And Pack Trail Fire are located outside of Dubois and no threat to us, but the smoke continues to blow this direction ruining our skies. The Elk Fire is closer, just out of Sheridan, and has jumped to 76,003 acres in a week. High winds are pushing it much like the House Draw Fire (and others) of a few weeks ago.
What seems insane is that although much of the fire is on the eastern slope of the Big Horn Mountains, we can see the smoke cloud from here.

This was after the winds had picked up and the towering clouds that it was minutes before had turned into a roiling mass of smoke. Pretty unbelievable.

If you would like to see some amazing photography of this fire, I’d suggest following Wyoming through the Lens on Facebook. Many people are taking some scary, impressive, and hellish photos.

Speaking of hell… my prayers go out to those that are dealing with Helene’s aftermath. It is sooo mind boggling when you think of the level of destruction across such a wide area.

In my tiny corner of the world, I’m so blessed to just get a tiny bit of time outside. Finally!

So glad you were able to get out of the house. Vernon is certainly looking after you. Lovely views even with the smoke.

As I’ve said before, knees take their own sweet time improving and are the pits for active people. Okay, may I haven’t said all that, but I’ve told you to go slow. Do you wear the brace? They do help even though they are cumbersome.

Glad you were able to get out of the house and see.

Fingers crossed about the fires. Hope they leave you alone.
