Freezing in the Past

Posted on January 20, 2025January 20, 2025

With the snow and fog and cold temperatures, (-14* this morning), Vernon was talking about how glad he was to not have to pitch hay from a bouncing hay trailer anymore. I agreed. Granted, I didn’t do it as much as he has, but I did my time… and I wondered if I had an old video to prove it! Well, son of a gun… I did! These days we have big bale feeders that the guys have built, so standing on a trailer lurching this way and that over frozen turds and sliding sideways on hillsides is a thing of the past. Fingers no longer grow stiff from the cold and frozen pitchfork handles… my heavy Carhartt doesn’t get such a workout… Who knew you could freeze and sweat from pitching hay off the trailer at the same time? Chopping ice with axes still takes place… but Johnny and Lucas, who both appear in these videos, are gone. The place in this video that we leased for almost 30 years is no longer ours… that stackyard, fence, and trees are gone. Time moves on.

I guess it’s a blessing to be able look back on our past with fondness and still be grateful we’ve improved our methods… and we’re not freezing so much anymore!

It’s 13 F. outside here – plenty cold for me! Seeing your videos today made me wonder how our ancestors and the pioneers ever survived.
Glad you have those hay bale feeders that are ingenious. Keep warm.
