Her Own

Posted on February 9, 2025February 9, 2025

Vernon looks over the small bunch of early calvers.

There was one he wanted a closer look at.

Sometimes, as a cow begins to calve, her hormones are high, and she will try to “kidnap” a calf thinking it’s hers, even though she hasn’t calved yet. That was happening here. She didn’t want to leave this calf tucked away in the trees. Vernon walked them both up to the corral, splitting off mom and baby at the last moment leaving the mom-to-be in the corral by herself to have her own baby.

What about the calf’s own mother? Did he take the calf back to where she left it?

The three were walked to the corral together and mother and calf were turned back while the one cow went to have her own calf.
