I was invited to show my pysanky eggs at Ten Sleep School’s Fine Arts Gala. A precursor to the Middle School/High School band concert, it offered kids a glimpse of community members that had talent in the arts and music. All the kids know me as the librarian but not many know of my creative streak.
Since pysanky is such a small part of what I do, I drug along an oil painting (from our “Bob Ross Night” at the library, a pastel, some photos, a woodburned stool, a needle felted bag, and some alcohol inked plates, light switches, and teapot. Oh, and wire wrapped jewelry and my “clay” pendant. Goodness, don’t forget my Red Dirt In My Soul book!

Now, I initially protested the invitation as I do “crafts”… I’m not fine art. It’s that “fine” word. I’m not a sculptor or great painter. What I tend to do is make every day objects just a tad bit more special… at least that’s how I see it. Practical art. That sounds better.
But then I thought of showing it to kids…
Wouldn’t it be nice to know that you don’t have to do just one thing as an artist? That if you get bored with one technique, trying another isn’t bad? Or another medium? So I came and sat and talked to kids and their families.
Then the concert began…

You can’t really see Quinlan… he’s playing his trumpet right behind the curtain.

Lorelei had to reassure classmates that the photo was indeed her… just a couple years ago.
It was an enjoyable evening.
Find me here!
You were so right to introduce the many types of art. I’m sure a few seeds will have been sewn in those young minds.
Terrific idea to promote the fun of crafting.
What fun!
