I spent time setting out some new flowers today. Hopefully, no snow or frost is in our future. I have these four large pots at my “front” door, which, technically, is the back door… anyhoo… I’ve been fighting my cats for possession of these pots. They seem to believe that they are their afternoon sunning beds. I chase them out, they come back later. They lay in a discarded Amazon box. They lay in a dog dish. Then they come back and lay in my flower pots.
Well, I couldn’t have them laying on my flowers…. The other day I laughingly mentioned I need a cage for the flowers to grow through… and an idea was born.

This area above an irrigation dam is filling in with new willows. While that can be good to stabilize the soil from being washed away during high water, Daniel encouraged me to take as many as I wanted.

I’m sure he was hoping for more than the large handful I lay by Indy’s feet.

At first, I attempted a basket look.

Then a little dinosaur cut through my gate, straight for the colorful petunias. Nope, nope, nope. Not for you!

All I did was bend the willows down into the pot. Willows are great for these sorts of things! I still have crowns made for a Girl Scout event years ago that are still in good shape.

I improved on every pot I did. I think it looks great. Hopefully, cat proof, and the flowers should grow right through the branches. I’m going to go back and improve my first two. An added bonus, if I have to cover them for frost, a bag will slip over and not damage the flowers. If the willow takes root, I don’t suppose it’ll be too troublesome. Anyone else ever try something like this?
