While I had to work at the library the first day of gathering cows in the badlands, I did help the second day,(and the third).

While I’ve not been brave enough to ride horseback since I wrecked my knee, my “pony” and I can catch up to the cowboys pretty fast. Lorelei, on the left, and Quinlan, right, kicked some cows up out of this draw as I met up with them. I have never, ever seen the country so brown and dry. It is also covered in prairie dogs.
Quinlan and I were left to trail the first bunch in.

We’d range out to the side, bringing in other cows as we went along. Daniel and his crew were working the northern end of the pasture and I never saw them. Brandon and Lorelei made a big circle. We soon met up with Megan as she had gathered the next valley.

This reservoir is the lowest I’ve seen it but we were grateful it had any water in it at all. Many ranchers had no water in their pastures this year.

Friday was the day that we were supposed to do a social media campaign to promote the Ten Sleep Library and our IMLS National Award. Well, obviously, I wasn’t at my office in the library, so as I came out on top of the hills, I made three Facebook live videos asking people to post, like, share, comment, and all that rot to help me promote the library with the hashtags #IMLS and #IMLSmedals. We did pretty good, but the cowboying librarian didn’t become as popular as I had hoped. Well, I gave it my best shot… and we continued to work cattle.

The three of us paired in 72 and then Brandon and Lorelei showed up with 24 more.

Though I missed being on horseback, I still thought I helped more than hurt the process! I think if I liked Milo more, I’d be more ready to get back to riding. Last time I rode him, though, I wasn’t trusting him… the turd… so I guess I’m just a side by side cowgirl now. At least I’m still out there helping, even in this horrible drought.

The brown looks more like October than June. All of the West can use some rain. Fingers crossed, prayers, and anything else you can think of. (Rain Dances, anyone?)
It does look very brown. Hope you get rain soon. You do a great job of observation. Thanks!
