This weekly movie from the blog Red Dirt In My Soul covers the reins I’m braiding, the pig wrestling event at the county fair (with Big Trails Natural Beef as sponsor), the mini “Girl Scout camp” with the granddaughters, moving cattle (of course), and a quick shot of a muddy little girl!

Battlefields

Posted on August 8, 2020August 8, 2020

After going through Fort Phil Kearny’s interpretive center and the little bit of the reconstructed fort (it was burned down in 1868 after the soldiers abandoned it due to a peace treaty), we headed to two battlefields. The two battles that took place close to Fort Phil Kearny were the Fetterman Battle and the Wagon…

Fort Phil

Posted on August 7, 2020August 7, 2020

I honestly did not know the “monster” I was creating. When Victoria and I came up with the idea that the boys would be cavalrymen in the costume contest at the kids’ rodeo, we didn’t anticipate the snowball. Sure, watch John Wayne in “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon”. Wear the costumes for ten minutes. I…

#TBT: New Project, v.2.0

Posted on August 6, 2020August 6, 2020

This was first posted August 7, 2009. If someone… who knew ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about ranching… were to ask me…“What is your lifestyle like out in the middle of nowhere?  Do you round-up cattle everyday like on television?” After I caught my breath from laughing and choking on my own spit, I would have to say,…

8. 9. 10.

Posted on August 4, 2020August 4, 2020

8. 9. 10. The guys weren’t really sure how many fires there were from the storm cell that passed us yesterday. With little rain but a fair amount of lightning, we had trees popping up on fire all around. Megan and Tess were gone with the boys, I picked up Lorelei from a babysitter and…

Mud Pies Allowed

Posted on August 3, 2020August 3, 2020

I didn’t take photos of the older kids. Everyone got in on the mud pie action with the resulting mess. I made them strip down and learn how to actually SCRUB their clothes. Another teachable moment. How to hang them on my clothesline that they can’t actually reach… another lesson. And they had fun the…

Re-Red: July 19 – July 25, 2020

Posted on August 2, 2020August 2, 2020

This week in review for Red Dirt in My Soul covers gathering the pasture by my house with the help of the little kids… The next day was our big trail up the mountain, starting at dawn. The cows were ready to go and it felt like I had little time for photos! It ended…

Ranch Scouts

Posted on August 1, 2020August 1, 2020

Earlier this summer, the little girls couldn’t go to Girl Scout camp because we were super busy. I figured I’d give them Girl Scout camp right here. Raising the flag. It’s a tad difficult to have a real flag ceremony with two girls and a two year old… Time to set up camp! Girl muscles…

#TBT: STUPID People, v.2.0

Posted on July 30, 2020July 30, 2020

This was first written and posted August 2, 2009. I have to say this made me laugh when I re-read it. I was very cranky! I’m not really sure if I should title this entry STUPID People, IGNORANT People, or MEANSPIRITED MISLED BLANKETY BLANK People. I always heard it was better to be ignorant…that just…

2020’s Next Challenge

Posted on July 28, 2020July 28, 2020

I probably should have written this a month ago… but, hey, I didn’t. What can I say? LIFE is crazy. With all the grasshoppers, drought conditions, and all the rest of the world going crazy, this came along and surprised us with something new. I’ve said for years that our forests are just T-H-I-S close…

Carol, Wyoming rancher

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
