Painting

Finally! One long, hot shower since I can bend my knee enough to clamber into the bathtub! Yay! Sponge baths and a quick shampoo just doesn’t cut it. My knee improves daily and I have an MRI scheduled. I still haven’t been outside, which is tough… but Vernon has been taking care of my chickens…

Quarter Panel

Posted on September 29, 2024

While I’m laid up, I guess some decorative art is on my agenda. First off, I have this buffalo skull hanging on some gorgeous, blue stained tongue and groove. My apologies for the weird angle. And that’s some sweetgrass I’ve temporarily placed in his nose. The point is, the skull has a tendency to blend…

Collected Stories 5

Well, as I rotate between having my knee elevated and accomplishing what little housework I can do, I was wondering what I was going to write about. I had nothing. Then I remembered today that I was supposed to have published another section of Oscar Hoback’s stories. Ooops. Sorry about that! LIFE OF O. E….

Sh&t Happens

Posted on September 26, 2024

I’m canceling my Throwback Thursday post to tell you a story… After gathering the mountain on Monday, the cows and calves had spent the night in what we refer to as the Horse Pasture, reflecting its history as a paddock where horses had plenty to eat, but were easy enough to catch when needed to…

Sports

Over Christmas vacation, Ten Sleep School will be in their new building. I’ve spent many an hour in this gym. It’s fun and sad to watch… but I won’t get over emotional… there’s more volleyball and basketball to go! Meanwhile, Quinlan and Jaxon are busy on the old football field.

Heifers – The Movie

Posted on September 21, 2024

From the wintery weather of March, branding, moving, feeding, then AI, blood testing, hauling, trailing, gathering, and trailing again… it comes down to this. These 18 month old heifers must pass this final test. If they fail to be pregnant, they will be sold. No matter their breeding or their looks, they must fit in…

LIFE OF O. E. HOBACK as told to Edna Greet (Vernon’s grandmother). Oscar now walked on to the ranch where Joe was working on Gypsum Creek and stayed with him a couple months, June July.  He then started out to walk to Will’s homestead on Flag Creek.  When he was within a few miles of…

Throwback Thursday: Close To the Action, v.2.0

Posted on September 19, 2024

This was first published September 21, 2014. Oh, my! That time of  year again… when the Good Doctor spends an entire day with his hand and arm being squeezed by the strong muscles of a cow’s ending digestive tract.  That explains why his entire left side is green by the time he’s done.  With their…
