First Night

Posted on January 29, 2011March 29, 2015

Well, it happened finally. We spent our first night at the Mills Place.  I need to rename it to something like the South Forty or Big Trails or some such name… but it will probably be the Mills Place for the next 30 years… No, we’re not completely moved… far from it! It’s kinda like…

Posted on August 2, 2010January 15, 2015

Well, tonight’s got to be a short entry… I’m due to wake up at 3 am…  finish throwing lunch in the coolers…  eat breakfast…  and be at the barn to saddle my horse at 4 am… So… why am I still up at 10:30? GOOD QUESTION! I guess to show you some wonderful oat hay…

Drenched

Posted on July 29, 2010March 27, 2015

I know many of you have enjoyed the wedding and its stories… and when I get a chance at posting the professional’s photos next week, I’ll return to a few more tales.  Since I was a tad bit busy, I didn’t get to take many more photos than what you’ve seen already and you know…

Hay, Hay!

Posted on June 27, 2010March 27, 2015

The discbine was the first to go…   they tried to straighten the bent shaft… but ended up buying a new part. Then the tractor blew a metal hydraulic hose.  Eighteen years of rubbing up against another part wore a hole.  Thanks to Brandon’s new MIG welder, Daniel was able to weld and fix it….

Hey Hey Hey Hay!

Posted on September 24, 2009March 25, 2015

I’ve said it before… Our life revolves around hay just as much (if not more!) than cattle… Of course, the reason we raise hay is because we raise cattle… and… strangely enough… those big ol’ critters tend to want to eat in the middle of winter when there’s snow on the ground… Cows are demanding…

Dam

Posted on June 14, 2009December 29, 2014

One thing about living on a ranch… you’ll have a variety of jobs to keep you occupied. Cowboy one day… Farmer the next… Mechanic… Plumber… Inventor… Vet… Fence builder… Irrigator… Dam engineer… Those days when you ride so hard and so long don’t end when the cowboying is done. You often go put in more…

Good grass year

Posted on June 19, 2008May 28, 2014

With all of the rain we’ve had, it has turned out to be a good grass year!  The stock should all be fat and happy!  Our haying season has begun as well, turning all this great green bounty into winter feed.  Daniel is our mower man, happily cutting hay down all day long.  As long…

Carol, Wyoming rancher

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
