Dally is laying on the edge of Otter Creek Canyon. It’s 500′ deep and the location of the wildfire we suffered through last summer. We gathered our cattle here the other day, and on this day, Vernon and I bundled up in our Rhino and drove a big loop looking for the 6 head we missed. It was COLD (we don’t have a windshield on the Rhino) and if we were slower than 20 mph, it was tolerable, faster… and I froze!
We wouldn’t probably have come clear down here before… but the fire and the Rhino provided us access! I should wander back with more time and a better camera and take some great black and white photos…
It is strange to see the country so OPEN… the junipers were the shirt this country wore… now bare skin is everywhere… and it’s both Uncomfortable and Irresistible… The embarrassment, the sorrow, the revealing loss of the trees pairing with the possibilities, the refreshed attraction, the promise of new growth…
The cowboys found the missing cows… and we headed home, wrapped in my blanket cocoon, contemplating what was, and what is.
Time for a Q&A, post your questions in the comment section and I’ll answer them in a few days!

Stark and lovely in its desolation.
Looking forward to the next Q&A post.
Of course my first thought was Oh Dally come away from the canyon …. LOL … But it is very impressive….. thanks for sharing…. Know you miss the trees…..
Hi Carol,
I met you about 4 years ago when Johnny came down to Thermop and brought me up to the ranch. I gave you the warm cap for taking Johnny’s place so we could run around.
Barbe, my daughter, sent me your “Red Dirt” blog and I have been reading it ever since. I enjoy hearing about what all you have been doing on the Ranch. I was never much of a Ranch person, I suppose you have heard by now!!
Thanks for an interesting place to “go”.
Marie
Great location for new Hollywood western! Also good pictures for next year’s calendar.
great pictures and commentary! It would be fun to explore the canyon.
That’s beautiful in a very stark way. Do you have any troubles with wild predators?
I love “the junipers were the shirt this country wore.”

In one of your recent posts, you were referring to the “open-ness” of some livestock. I’m still curious what you meant by that haha. Looking forward to hearing the answer!

500 feet down! It seemed further when I was six or seven.
Always thought it was to deep and to much of a hike to just go fishing! One of the spots where my Dad loved to fish and pan for gold (always could find a few flakes). Picture does bring back some fond memories! Thanks!
Awesome. Well worth the return trip. The picture is great but no picture replaces seeing it, although your pictures do come close. 🙂 Thanks for the memory.
