Hikes

Posted on March 24, 2020March 24, 2020

We’re getting in a hike a day… the dogs and I are loving it! We haven’t found very many treasures, but that doesn’t keep us from looking!

Many of the cliffs or buildings around here have these barn swallow nests. These are last year’s version.

If anyone knows what kind of nest this is, let me know! I heard a strange bird down along the creek, but the dogs chased it away before I could see it. This nest is in a crack in the cliff right there with the barn swallow nests. I assume it’s last year’s model as well.

This is part of the neighbor’s irrigation head gate. It did make me laugh. Just because you are the “cheif engineer”, it doesn’t mean you can spell…

Here are two treasures from the other day. The tiny one is a freshwater clam shell. You can see it’s very tiny. Close to the same place, I have found one almost 3” long. It’s around here somewhere, but I couldn’t lay hands on it to compare. The second one is NOT a bullet. I showed finding this in my video. It is a belemnite fossil.

Wikipedia describes belemnites as: “an extinctorder of squid-like cephalopods that existed from the Late Triassic to Late Cretaceous. Unlike squid, belemnites had an internal skeleton that made up the cone.” We find many belemnites around here from 1/2″ – 3″ long.

More hikes to come… more treasures to find…

Thank you for naming the fossil. I have been trying to remember the names of the ones we used to find at Alcova. I gave all those treasures away years ago. But I still have great memories

How Cool!!! Fossils in Wyoming! Who would have thought. I guess I shouldn’t be so surprised. My mom told me that when they dug an ice house, there were shells in the bottom and that was in Nebraska. Geology is interesting.

    Thanks, Carol

Those are actually cliff swallow nests – gourd shaped with an entrance hole. Barn swallow nests are cup-shaped, open on top, and attached at one side to a wall.

Love those red cliffs. Great fun to see the bird nests close up. Let us know if anyone identifies that cozy nest.

not sure about that nest, but our barn swallows build their nests a lot different around here in Iowa, we had a lot of’em on the farm, & several years ago we had’em here in town, I had a pair build their nest on one of my window frames, that was neat! now for some reason they have left, in fact, many birds have left, not sure if the tornado was the cause, or there’s some predator bird moved in, that’s what my neighbor lady thinks- kinda sad-
