There is an urge, every year, to escape the ranch before calving season starts. Knowing that you will be busy, often round the clock for days on end, somehow stirs the desire for a day away. We try to take Sundays off, though that often doesn’t work, but today Vernon and I flew the coop. If nothing else, lunch away is a treat.
How about Deer Haven on the mountain? Not opened yet after undergoing a renovation.
Paintrock Inn? Closed.
Lisa’s? Closed.
Eighty miles driven and our favorites were closed. It *was* Sunday.
Aha! The Old Shell Store. We ate some great burgers, then drove some backroads.
We like to see new country.
Then it occurred to me. We weren’t that far from a very unique geologic formation I had seen on YouTube months ago. We wandered and drove…
My memory was somewhat vague. I wanted to get to this place as seen on Myron Cook’s YouTube channel. I believe we were close, but the sun was setting and we had a drive of almost two hours. I cast a wistful glance to the north as Vernon headed south. We will try again.

Myron Cook. Wow! Geology is one of my greatest interests. With joy and amazement I’ll be following Mr Cook.
What amazing formations. Thanks for the You tube link. It was very interesting and educational. Hope you get up close to them one day!
Photos from your adventure are really intriguing and beautiful. I did
check out the video link and enjoyed it. Never seen anything like those
flat-iron formations.
I’ve got to check out that You Tube if what you saw there was better than what you saw Sunday…
This was amazing.
Gorgeous photos!
Looks fun
