Well, I kind of get caught up in the whole Independence Day thing… and I may share more, but we do also ranch around here… and our last drive I’ve neglected except for the one Family Drive photo I posted. It’s such a pretty pasture. It is steep. And rocky. And covered in lots of evergreens. But it makes for gorgeous photos.
We start by emptying our yearling heifers out of the semi’s that brought them to the top of the mountain. I always appreciate our truck drivers… the majority of semi drivers would probably refuse this trip!
Yearlings are yearlings… no calves to worry about, no reliable cows to show them the way… they zig and zag more than walk in straight lines. They’re kinda crazy. Sometimes they go fast. It kept the adults on their toes…
Once we were over the edge, they slowed a bit because it is rocky!
As we work our way down to the road, the trees close in on us.
There are many springs, so you watch for boggy places in addition to trees and rocks. We work the edges where possible, but the heifers are fairly happy to stick to the road as well.
Oh, look! There’s Vernon conducting some ranch business on his cell phone as we ride by…
Before we know it, the heifers have made it to the bottom half of the pasture where they’ll spend the next few weeks before we open the gate to let them enjoy the entire pasture.
If I were a heifer… I’d be thrilled to spend the next few weeks with this as my home!

A wonderful ‘office view’.
Yes these are wonderful! I can just be swept away in them looking at the beautiful West!
The kids being along is great! And that last one just shows the vastness!
Looks like it was a great day. Thanks as always Carol!
Yep, these are gorgeous photos! Such variety of terrain, too. Rocky
trails, trees, streams, and mountains in the background are all very nice…
plus Reagan on her pony, your littlest helper!
