A few weeks ago, I saw online (somewhere, I can’t remember or I’d give credit) the idea that a bead curtain would keep wild birds out of your chicken coop. So I tried it. See my initial test run HERE.
I thought I’d update you since I’ve made a few changes.
First of all, it’s still working great. Since its installation, I’ve not found one wild bird inside my coop. There’s been below zero weather, which really encourages entry by wild birds, but I haven’t found any. I’ve seen little sparrows on the ramp to the door, so it’s not like the little birds left.
What has happened is that the fishing line that I strung the beads on has broken. Two lengths of beads have simply disappeared. I’m hoping I’ll find them scratched into the straw when I clean the coop!

It was a simple fix. I used jewelry wire and made replacement lengths. I also made two more to cover what I thought was extra wide openings on the ends. A half hour of work and, ta-da, repaired.

Oh, I imagine I may have to replace other strands if they wear out but I wanted to let you know, if you haven’t quite managed to make yours yet that wire may be the way to go. Also, if any of you out there are entrepreneurs, consider making these! Although avian flu is more likely carried by waterfowl, keeping those little wild birds out can’t hurt! The girls are content.

Give it a try and let me know if it works for you!

I hope nobody ate those beads!
So glad this idea has worked well and kept your girls safe.
Glad your invention works. Very clever to keep the ‘girls’ contented,
and the unwanted guests out!
