Not So

Posted on April 16, 2016April 15, 2016

(Part Two) Two bags of IV fluid, antibiotics, electrolytes… and the calf lays on my lawn, in the warmth of the afternoon sun. We alternate a bottle of milk replacer with a bottle of electrolytes a couple of hours later…  hoping the fluid will kick his gut back into gear. As the sun sets, we…

Scourge

Posted on April 15, 2016April 14, 2016

He won’t say it.  But I see it in his eyes, in his touch, in his gruff, “You’re all right.  You’re OK.”  His rough hands rubs the black hair on a (not so) small nose, petting the calf like a dog, and dust rises to the top of the hair and coats his hand. The…

#plant16

Posted on April 13, 2016April 12, 2016

With the weather turning nice, the guys have been working on fields getting them ready for #plant16. (that’s the twitter hashtag for farmers working on planting this season’s crops) The fields have been plowed, disced, leveled, and now… here comes the alfalfa and oats! The seed is delivered on pallets, and Vernon unloads them. The…

Zoom

Posted on April 12, 2016April 11, 2016

I was sent to town today with some parts that needed the machine shop… it gave me the chance to wander around town, checking out some things just for fun… I went to the bike shop… and test drove a Specialized Women’s bike… I liked it… the seat seamed comfy, it was more upright than…

Song and Silence

Posted on April 11, 2016April 10, 2016

A day of shifting light and light rain. A day of searching and finding, but not what we were looking for. A day of clouds and sunshine rays. A day overflowing with bird song and silence.

Must Bee Summer

Posted on April 10, 2016April 9, 2016

A summer day at 73˚!  The grass grew today for sure.  Within the past three days we’ve gone from an elusive “is it green, yet?” to “wow, Wyoming’s thrown her green gown on!” While I am trying to finish up some yard work, once it was warm enough, I gave up my rake and lawnmower…

Welcome Home

Posted on April 9, 2016April 9, 2016

A meadowlark seduces the stars and on the morning breeze, the glorious and unique song is brought forth… lighting the prairie in sparkles of notes. The sandhill cranes’ delightful song is much like an appealing grating of slate. Bluebirds twitter “truleee, truleee”. Each their own sign of spring. But until those large wings settle softly…

Goofball

Posted on April 6, 2016April 5, 2016

I can’t help it! I HAVE to show you the newest addition to my studio! This chair and couch have been stored for years… they aren’t anything very special… a wooden frame, fairly disgusting cushions.  But I have kept my eyes open and sure enough… I found cushions I wanted. Some with just the right…

Check Out the Chicks

Posted on April 5, 2016April 4, 2016

It’s hard to get chicks in focus. On the left is a 2 week old+ barred rock chick, on the right is one of my new brown leghorn chicks. What a difference a couple of weeks makes! They are twice the size of the babies.  Thankfully, they didn’t pick on them… or peck on them….

Carol, Wyoming rancher

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
