On The Way

Posted on April 29, 2011January 12, 2015

Seems as if our days are either filled with this: Or this:  which was taken today… we got 5 inches of WET snow! So, like ranchers tend to do… you go to town when it’s too nasty to do anything else! We took Boomer to the vet because he’s been shaking his head and digging…

Stupid Turkeys

Posted on April 28, 2011January 12, 2015

These are turkeys. Trust me. I know. They are NOT bulls in the neighbor’s place… they are Vagrant Delinquent Escapees from our pasture where they rightfully belong eating OUR green grass, not the neighbor’s. Therefore, they are Turkeys with a capital T. Especially since Vernon had already repaired the broken fence and got them out…

Wordless Wednesday – “The Weaning Corral”

Posted on April 27, 2011January 12, 2015

The remnants of the weaning corral are retired from active use… but still stand with proud dedication and firm belief that it could still do the job again, if asked… **** April 27, 2010   Garden – Potato 101 April 27, 2009   Ponies April 27, 2008   No entry.

My Easter Gift

Posted on April 26, 2011November 22, 2014

We’re at that stage… My kids are too old to decorate eggs for Easter… even my pysanky is for me… no one joins in. Their nice Easter baskets sit gathering dust in the basement. I’ve always tried to keep Easter going, laying trails with candy that they’d track down and find some little gift inside……

Done

Posted on April 25, 2011January 13, 2015

Well, well… We did it. Four trips to Shaw Pasture with varying amounts of cows and their calves and our yearling steers. It is a LONGLONG trip with baby calves. I puttered around on Google Earth and figured it was 7.5 miles *roughly*. Roughly being the operative term here… baby calves don’t necessarily walk in…

Today on the Ranch

Posted on April 23, 2011January 13, 2015

Wow. Just face it. It takes us a good six hours to travel to that pasture and mother ’em up. We paired ’em out of the pasture and took them to the house about a mile away. That took a while after saddling our horses at nine as both boys had to top off a…

A Mighty Voice

Posted on April 22, 2011April 1, 2015

“32Sing unto God, ye kingdoms of the earth; O sing praises unto the Lord; Selah:33To him that rideth upon the heavens of heavens, which were of old; lo, he doth send out his voice, and that a mighty voice.” Psalm 68 Enjoy your family this Easter holiday… I am! Through My Windshield

Posted on April 21, 2011January 13, 2015

We kicked the heifers and their babies out today. Since the heifers are young, they didn’t really know where they were going… and that they should keep their babies with them.  They’d wad up and stop and we’d get ’em lined out sorta and they’d wad up again.  It’s hard to trail things when they…

Between the Blades

Posted on April 18, 2011January 13, 2015

Yellow bells. Usually the first wildflower to bloom on the prairie. But look again. See the old grass?  Still standing.  Still nutritious enough to make good feed for cattle. See the green grass?  Here it comes… another season of food for cattle and wildlife. Imagine it all gone… burned to a crisp by wildland fires….
