Trail Them Home

Posted on June 21, 2022June 21, 2022

I know I shouldn’t wait until late to write, but it seems like I always do. We spent two days riding, gathering the badlands. We are missing just a few, and Vernon and Daniel searched again today and found a couple that belong to some neighbors but not us. There’s many a hidey hole out…

Tomorrow

They gathered the badlands today. I babysat and took them lunch. Once again I sit here nodding off… More tomorrow.

Back at It

Posted on June 19, 2022June 19, 2022

It’s time to pull the cows and steers off of BLM land. They’re in the Willow Creek Pasture. That’s a close pasture to the Home Place, so Jaxon and Quinlan were lucky enough to play cowboy. We did a bit of back and forth, going out, gathering, bringing them back, and heading out for more….

Gardening in Wyoming

Posted on June 18, 2022June 18, 2022

Well, I had held off planting my tomatoes for quite a while… we’d had a few cold mornings later than usual, but I finally planted them. Here it is… two weeks later or so… and, son of a gun, it froze the other morning. The stems don’t really seem to be frozen, just the leaves……

Regenerative Workshop

Posted on June 17, 2022June 17, 2022

Megan, Brandon, and I attended a workshop put on by UW Ag Extension. Around 40 people attended, which is excellent because June is one of the busiest months for ranchers and farmers around here. The main speaker was Alejandro Carrillo from Chihuahua, Mexico. His basic idea is that intensive mob grazing by cattle followed by…

#TBT: ”Greatest Inventions”, v.2.0

Posted on June 16, 2022June 16, 2022

This was first published June 19, 2011. About 3 am, I felt yukky. About 4 am, Vernon awoke to get ready to ride and gather our steers (who sell tomorrow on Northern Livestock Video Auction).   About 4:45, he and Brandon left and I remained on the couch.   Miserable and, now, guilty as well….

Ah, Well…

Posted on June 14, 2022June 14, 2022

It happened years and years ago. Victoria says she remembers it, but I doubt my boys do. The rains were tremendous in the spring… and we drove out for a picnic into the badlands. Wildflowers were everywhere. Just fields of paintbrush… I took some old VHS movies of the kids and the flowers. Driving out,…

Surprise!

Posted on June 13, 2022June 13, 2022

(Last night, I was tired and fading fast… I couldn’t find my picture i wanted to post, my eyes were slamming shut and my internet kept wafting in and out. Finally, I just quit and left it all!) A loon! Really. While I know they’re supposed to be around Yellowstone, I haven’t ever seen one…

Random

Posted on June 10, 2022June 10, 2022

Just a few random pics… Dandelions are having a great year. Narrow trails and smart horses… The Ant Hill just erupted! This hill, the Ant Hill, has a fantastic cloud behind it and it reminded me of a volcano… A blue heron circles above us, irritated at disturbing their nest.

Carol, Wyoming rancher

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
