Well, Shoot!

Posted on November 3, 2019November 3, 2019

Vernon and the boys helped my brother-in-law set some posts in his corral today. Tess and the kids and I tagged along to visit my sister and play just a tiny bit. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but we sure had fun blasting some clay pigeons from the sky! I have had…

Busy Day

Posted on November 2, 2019November 2, 2019

We started off by taking professional family photos. It was kind of crazy, but Tess and Megan had a list of the shots we wanted… families, couples, grandkids with great grandpa… There are 19 of us, so many different combinations! We were supposed to do these a month ago, but instead of fall leaves, we…

Badlands

Posted on November 1, 2019November 1, 2019

Today we kicked the cows out to their new pasture in the badlands. This is Bureau of Land Management land… meaning that it is “public” land. We pay a grazing lease on it. People can come out and hunt on it, or walk around and enjoy nature… but we’re the ones that pay. We also…

Freezing Cold Work

Posted on October 29, 2019October 29, 2019

The cows they brought from the Mesa Pasture had to be sorted today. That put Vernon on the four wheeler and Daniel and Brandon on horseback. Me? I drove my Durango and was told just to make sure they went in the corral! I could handle that! It was cold. Fourteen degrees when I left…

Partner

Posted on October 28, 2019October 28, 2019

Snow and -5. Not exactly typical October weather. The guys brought the cows off the Mesa. I stayed home with my tiny partner.

Tomorrow

Posted on October 26, 2019October 26, 2019

I was going to make a video from the Fifteenmile trip, but didn’t get it done. I made a short little time lapse video this morning, but it didn’t take a long video, and… I didn’t get that finished either. By noon, our gorgeous morning had socked in and started to snow. This evening, we’re…

Fifteenmile Final Photos

Posted on October 25, 2019October 25, 2019

The wild horse corral at the Fifteenmile HMA was a stout affair. We use portable panels on occasion. A couple of well placed metal t posts and some wire usually does the trick. Not here. This setup is solid! After they come into the trap, fed by wings of sisal twine, the horses are sorted…

Fifteenmile

Posted on October 24, 2019October 24, 2019

We met early at the local BLM office. (That’s the Bureau of Land Management for all you non-western state people!). Four vehicles formed the small caravan as we drove over an hour to the Fifteenmile HMA. This arid 81,000 acre plot of land is supposed to be home to 100-230 wild horses. Currently, it is…
