One of the Holes in Our Lives

Posted on June 16, 2011January 12, 2015

Hiking along a few weeks ago… technically it was May 3rd… I snapped a quick shot of the newly worked field next to the creek… the red bank above was catching the sunset light… and I liked the brown/blue/red combination. Not a great photo. I take tons of *notgreatphotos*. I just don’t usually share them!…

Questions and Answers – June 2011 Edition

It’s late and I’m just sitting down to do this… better get crackin’!   Lou Anne wrote:
Hi Carol, I was thinking about Dally trying to get in and be with Elsa’s puppies and not being accepted. Has Elsa shown any interest in the new puppies and if so, is Dally letting Grandma visit?     …

A Slice of Our Life

Posted on June 12, 2011January 12, 2015

I thought this little slice of our life made for good commentary. When working cattle… sometimes you just need to stay out of the way… But keep a watchful eye! **** Any more questions?  Answers will appear tomorrow! **** June 12, 2010   Varmint Gitters June 12, 2009   The Continuing Travels of Cousin Robb…

Puppy Day!

Posted on June 11, 2011August 1, 2013

The pups have quickly quadrupled in size… Their eyes are open, their ears are open,  they shimmy along…   Smidges of personality appear.   Stormy and Rainy are super mellow.   Joss alerts to everything.   Dawes investigates.   Jireh lays quietly and snuggles.   Shawnee and Husker and Windy and Nioby handle everything in…

Western Conference

Posted on June 10, 2011January 12, 2015

We gathered another pasture. It’s called the Joe Henry.  He was the guy Vernon’s grandfather bought this place from back in 1909. I’ve always liked the name… even named a puppy that once… although his new owners didn’t keep it. It was tough riding.  There’s lots of bentonite and volcanic ash in that pasture, both…

A Zillion Flowers

Posted on June 9, 2011January 12, 2015

The other evening, we took a drive up the mountain road.  I hadn’t been up yet this year, and we figured it was time for a little relaxing drive. It’s always fun… seeing how thick the wildflowers are at the base of the mountain, and how on top the Spring Beauties are still in evidence….

Power Outage

Posted on June 7, 2011January 12, 2015

I was rushing to finish mowing my lawn before the thunderstorms hit… I did. Then they did. As I walked into the house, it was dark.  No power. Musta been a lightning strike somewhere… I broke out candles and oil lamps and a lantern. By 9:30, I couldn’t keep my eyes open as we’d been…

WARNING: CUTENESS AHEAD! Here’s the first published video of Rimrock English Shepherd’s current litter! This was taken yesterday. It was 91*. They were HOT. They were UNHAPPY when I took this video. I finally got a wet towel for them to crawl on so they could cool down. The silence and relaxation was immediate… but…

Ranch Horse School

Posted on June 5, 2011January 12, 2015

Branding was a success. Everyone is still healthy (barring a few rope burns and various bruises and one hard landing). Everyone left with full stomachs and smiles on their faces. Every calf was branded… even the big OOPS calf from December! We do have about 60 more to do… we switched up our pastures due…
