Bogged Down

Posted on July 20, 2009January 1, 2015

Left home at 4 am… Returned at 8 pm… Successfully moved stock to lower mountain pasture… Horses, dogs, people tired… Can you read Dally’s expression of exhaustion??? She did very well chasing cows out of bogs today… but her look says it all… Whew… Did I really really want to be a cowdog when I…

Posted on July 19, 2009January 1, 2015

While I should be cleaning my house… I have company coming… I figured I better get this posted or it wouldn’t happen later! Kids’ Rodeo… synonymous with hottestdayinJuly/slowerthanmolasses/cuterthancute/whyinthe’elldowedothis? But boy! you end up with some cutie photos! Typical Grand Entry Posting of the Colors… until you notice the Wyoming flag bearer is kinda dressed “funny”……

Kids’ Rodeo

Posted on July 18, 2009December 31, 2014

I did ambulance standby for the Ten Sleep Kids’ Rodeo today. I’ve helped off and on with this activity since my kids were little… read 15 years or so… I managed to acquire a few good photos… and a few funny stories… but I beg that you let me tell them tomorrow… The hour is…

Cathartic?

Posted on July 17, 2009December 31, 2014

Cathartic… purging the bowels… metaphorically cleansing the psyche. Ewwww! Right? Never did I know until today… that turkey vultures’ Latin name is Cathartes aura. Purifier. As in regurgitation. As in urohydrosis. Look that one up! Why do I care? Because up at the Mills place you see this… See ’em? They love it up there……

The Setting

Posted on July 16, 2009December 31, 2014

The setting for our centennial party is around “the white house”. This is the original homestead building built by Joe Henry and added on to by the Greets. Usually, most people see it from the “white house” side… like here. But on the back side is the log cabin part.  The white clapboard part was…

Twelfth Day

Posted on July 14, 2009March 25, 2015

Twelve more days until our big celebration… Posters have been up in Ten Sleep for a week now… Postcards have been sent to friends, relatives, and business people… I’ve ordered plates…blue as the sky… I’ve ordered cups… brick red as the dirt… I’ve got tablecloths… green as the grass and hay… Red Dirt in My…

Memories of Snow…

Posted on July 13, 2009December 31, 2014

When I took this photo the other day… I yearned for those snowcapped Big Horns to share a little chilly breeze with me… I’ve been painting in the heat… Moving cattle in the heat… Mowing weeds in the heat… Sorting piles of junk necessary metal pipes/bars/angle iron/flat iron/etc/etc in the heat… Wasn’t it just a…

A Distinctive Smell

Posted on July 12, 2009December 31, 2014

There’s a unique smell that I have a love/hate relationship with… It’s kept me company on many a starlit night… It’s fired our branding barrels many a year ago… It’s given me worries about my guys… It’s made me sick to my stomach… It’s made me cry… It’s made me lose sleep… It’s come within…

Rodeo Revamped

Posted on July 11, 2009December 31, 2014

Playing with Photoshop can be addictive… That’s A.W. whose been a rodeo judge here quite a while… a little “antique” effect adds to the height of this photo, dontcha think? A tad bit of cropping and black vignette lets the cowboys and judge be together in this one. Sepia (my favorite!) brings a timelessness to…

A Hot Move

Posted on July 10, 2009March 25, 2015

The  problem: Cows on the fence… they want to leave for the cooler mountain, but it isn’t time yet. Some dirty cows even are IN the field! Then there are the troublemakers… Lucas and Elsa have success! Lucas makes it to Bruner Draw… and goes looking for a mud puddle… he’s overheating and tired already….

A Find

Posted on July 9, 2009March 25, 2015

I know someone who found something and then, wonder of wonders, returned it to the closest owner available. Her husband is a carpenter and was remodeling an old cabin.  Tucked away in the bottom of an old cabinet, was this. Absolutely gorgeous, is it not??? Hand-tooled… spectacular. It even has multiple pockets inside! It has…

Carol, Wyoming rancher

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
