Mailbox

Posted on January 24, 2009December 9, 2014

Today saw the return of winter with freezing temperatures and snow.  The wind chill added to the briskness. The other day was a different story.  Gorgeous sunshine and warm temperatures begged me to go for a walk to the mailbox.  My months of inactivity showed themselves as it took me longer than normal to make…

One More Time

Posted on January 23, 2009December 9, 2014

Well, sure ’nuff… The pump wasn’t working this morning.  My first order of business… a quick shower and a not-so-quick “run” to Worland.  The snow was falling and the 18 miles to Ten Sleep were slick.  The increased traffic on the stretch between Ten Sleep and Worland had worn off the skiff of snow and…

Unromantic

Posted on January 22, 2009January 15, 2015

While Lucas and Elsa seem to be going through a “romantic” period, today wasn’t very full of the ranch romance that people believe happens. You know… “Oh, you live on a ranch – how romantic.” “You get to ride horses like cowboys??? How romantic!” Choke. It should be more like… “Oh, you get to pull…

Canyon

Posted on January 21, 2009January 15, 2015

Last week we traveled over the Big Horn Mountains to deliver my daughter’s new Ford Escape to her in Buffalo, Wyoming.  90% of my trips over this mountain are enjoyable, 10% are the kind where your knuckles hurt after driving it! Ten Sleep Canyon is an impressive stretch of highway with switchbacks and a runaway…

Sparkles

Posted on January 20, 2009December 9, 2014

I took Elsa to my vet today to get her OFA done…  Finally, I accomplished that goal! I was late starting out because Elsa is standing as of this morning… and I hoped she and Lucas would uh… consummate their relationship.  But I had an appointment to keep and couldn’t afford to give them the…

Dally Learns (Video)

Posted on January 19, 2009February 15, 2015

Well, last night when Vimeo told me it would be 65 minutes before my video could be ready to watch… I gave up. So to learn about this video, go to yesterday’s blog… or just to watch it – go here. Corral Work from Carol Greet on Vimeo.

More Preparations

Posted on January 19, 2009December 13, 2014

Along with pulling up the electric fence wire, our preparations for calving included cleaning the calving shed.  The red shed is easily seen from my house through the boxelder trees.  It is a five minute walk from here. Soon we’ll be putting our heifers, 60 of ’em, in here every night.  We’ll sort off the…

Dally Learns (Hopefully!)

Posted on January 18, 2009February 15, 2015

I made this video the last week… The boys were still here and two friends, L. and S., helped us out that day as well.  Our work is done, so we kick these steer calves out of the corral and take them into the field between my house and Johnny’s house. I start off with…

Hopes

Posted on January 17, 2009December 9, 2014

As of Tuesday, Elsa and her daughter Dally are both in heat.  Thus begins the “dog shuffle” where the girls are either in the kennel or in my kitchen/mud room or supervised outside.  Lucas is rotated to wherever they aren’t.  I hope to breed Elsa as it has been since November 2007 when she delivered…

Sorting OOPE Fave

Posted on January 16, 2009December 9, 2014

The idea of OOPEs is that the photographs are taken as my camera sits in the pocket of my Carhartt coat.  Yesterday’s photos especially proved this point… this shot more than the others.  There’s the cuff of my coat on the upper left… and the edge of my pocket on the bottom.  In between is…

Sorting OOPE

Posted on January 15, 2009December 9, 2014

I did it!  I actually took photos while sorting cattle!  Yes, I waited until most of it was done and yes, most of the pics are definitely OOPEs but considering I didn’t drop my camera and Tart and I didn’t lose any cows and Tart and I didn’t fall down on the *)(&*&^% ice – I…

January Gather OOPE

Posted on January 14, 2009December 9, 2014

We began gathering our cows off the BLM today with our neighbors that share the allotment.  I am sore from hunching up against the snow even though it was very light and a fairly nice day.  I took my hot shower and I’m ready for bed, but, of course, have to post these OOPE photos…

Carol, Wyoming rancher

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
