Branding Day

Posted on June 4, 2009December 29, 2014

Have you ever smelled burning hair? Ever get distracted with the hair curler and singe just a  teensy bit of hair that you are sure no one would *ever* notice?? Ever play with a “metal match” while building a fire and have your long blond hair fall off your shoulder at the precise instant you…

Nick and Molly

Posted on June 2, 2009December 29, 2014

Dally’s brother came for a visit the other day… Nick, who belongs to Kristie Crump of Gillette, Wyoming came with her daughter Lee Ann Brown.  Lee Ann is the new proud owner of Molly. Got that??? Mother/daughter now own full siblings (from different litters). As soon as they drove up and I saw the dog…

Please Stand By…

Posted on June 1, 2009December 29, 2014

After 3 days of riding, I got the day “off”. I’ve cooked the branding meal for tomorrow… Lasagna, breadsticks, corn, salad, jello salad, Monster cookies, toffee nut bars, peppermint brownies, and ice cream.  I didn’t cook the ice cream.  But ice cream counts since it is an important part of the menu! Plus I did…

Sore and Achy Part 3

Posted on May 31, 2009March 17, 2015

Each day begins in glory. Cool air… Soft light… Multiple bird songs… the meadowlark, the lark bunting, the robins, the magpies, even the screech of pheasants… The metallic slam of a horse trailer door and shuffling hooves… Quiet laughter of cowboys… And cowgirls. The drive to today’s pasture area accompanied by Sirius radio and good…

Sore and Achy Part 2

Posted on May 30, 2009March 17, 2015

Another day, another dollar. Made a bigger loop today… well, OK, we hauled out and then rode… so it wasn’t really a circle shaped ride. More like an “r”… With multiple squiggly lines radiating out… Left at 6:30. Back at 3:30. People/horses/dogs all getting tired. We will be even more tired after tomorrow, when we…

Sore and Achy Part 1

Posted on May 29, 2009December 29, 2014

Nothing like spending 7 hours on horseback to find those sore places on your saddle. Ugh.  I’m ready for bed, but there’s some laundry to do… and I NEED a shower. It was in the 80’s today, so not a lot of fun… and the guys have to irrigate before we ride, so those days…

A I School part two

Posted on May 26, 2009December 29, 2014

For those readers who cringe at poop, personal bodily functions/descriptions… THIS POST IS NOT FOR YOU! Come back tomorrow. For those readers who have a curiosity about artificial inseminations, this is VERY basic. But, it’ll do… Yesterday we took the frozen semen out of the tank, put it in warm water to get those wigglers…

A I School part one

Posted on May 25, 2009December 20, 2014

I decided I’d better break this post down to two parts… For the more squeamish… skip tomorrow’s post… I’ll give more details then. For now… Welcome to A. I. School! We’ve AI’d for quite a few years now… but only on our first calf heifers.  We have the opportunity to get good Angus semen for…

What Are Cowdogs Good For?

Posted on May 24, 2009December 20, 2014

What are cowdogs good for? They are great for going down to the creek to kick the cows back out into the badlands. They are awesome at going up hillsides to kick cows back out into the badlands. They easily handle the ones brushed up in the shade to remind them to go back out…
