#TBT: Minute Movie:Trailing By, v.2.0

Posted on November 2, 2023

This was first published November 1, 2012. This Minute Movie is twice as long as normal… but I just couldn’t resist the peacefulness that saturates this video! We are letting the cows trail by… Vernon on horseback in the middle of the gate, getting a good count as they walk past.  Daniel leaves my side,…

Miserable

Posted on October 30, 2023

After the big long day, the next day, I headed to work. I only work two days a week at the library, but often it seems, I miss out on ranch work. Megan took this one photo for me on Wednesday. Leaving the heifers behind at my place, they trailed the rest of the herd…

Long Day

Posted on October 29, 2023

The fog had hung low and so we waited for sunshine. An hour later than anticipated, we began. Daniel and I on the lower end, Vernon, Brandon, Megan, and Quinlan on the upper side. The cows were not very cooperative and we couldn’t blame them. Fall had been glorious. Moisture was abundant. Grass was plentiful….

Rocks

Posted on October 28, 2023

Definitely sandstone. Note the harder layer not eroding as fast as the rest… Lower down just a hundred yards from where Vernon began building his new dam, this narrow split in the rock created its own mini ecosystem different than what exists atop the ten foot sidewalls. Here grew chokecherry and Oregon grape, thistles and…

More Treasures

Posted on October 27, 2023

So many things… I left you with promises of geology and dugout history… and since then we’ve brought the cows down from the Mesa, it has snowed 7” and fallen as low as -1*, roads were nasty so I didn’t make it to my long awaited Mike Rowe show in Casper, everyone else worked and…

#TBT: Daily Adventure, v.2.0

Posted on October 26, 2023

This was first posted October 27, 2012. Funny thing, I don’t remember doing this! I’m losing it. Seriously. After promoting myself yesterday as “The Amazingly Awesome And Cool Visual Finalist For BlogHer’s Voice of the Year Category”, I’ve just spent the last 23 minutes wandering around my house searching for my camera. Yup. Took some…

Nest

Posted on October 24, 2023

I had noticed it from far away. A conglomeration of sticks balanced on the side of the cliff. I stared at it. It wasn’t quite right. An eagle’s nest would have plenty of white poo around it. There was none. Even from miles away, bird nests can be easily seen, the white standing out like…

Fresh Start

Posted on October 23, 2023

I finished canning my tomatoes, washed up a bit, then decided to track Vernon down. He’d gone to the Mesa to rework an old reservoir. It’s never really held water and he had planned to dig it out and rework the road so that a truckload of bentonite might be hauled down to the location….

Project of the Day

Posted on October 22, 2023

After I slogged through the creek and squelched up the dusty road, I joined the guys in The Project of the Day. We irrigate mainly by flood irrigation. In short, a temporary dam is built on the creek, backing up water to flow through a head gate which can be adjusted or closed, the water…
