Battlescars

Posted on July 20, 2010January 15, 2015

After my wreck yesterday afternoon, and then all the bawling I heard last night, I anticipated a big mess this morning.  It must have taken them just til this morning to find each other… because as we rode out, no calves or cows were in sight.  They had reunited and then took themselves to the…

High Hopes

Posted on July 19, 2010March 27, 2015

I was very excited today… The boys and their girlfriends were to ride the Mills badlands pasture, fixing fence, and re-doing my electric fence watergap again… stupid cows. I, on the other hand, was given the job of gathering the Ritchie pasture on my own.  Alone.  Me and my dogs.  Whoopie! Well, I was just to…

Mole Hunting Wing Man

Posted on July 12, 2010March 27, 2015

Well… If I haven’t said it before, I’ll say it now… To be a rancher in Wyoming… You must be flexible. Not gymnastically flexible.  Most ranchers have to take a few steps before they can straighten up to full height after sitting for a bit, much less do a back flip! Flexible with your schedule….

Varmint Gitters

Posted on June 12, 2010January 9, 2015

When I first investigated English Shepherds, one of the “side benefits” was the tendency of these dogs to “dispatch vermin” according to the breed standard. When you’ve had dogs give rabbits, deer, raccoons, skunks, mice, moles, and voles free rein in your yard and garden… dispatching vermin is an excellent idea! I have to say,…

Wordless Wednesday – “Lucas Portrait”

Posted on June 9, 2010January 9, 2015

This is perhaps the best portrait I’ve ever taken of Lucas. Plus, remember to submit your questions for the month… I’ll answer them tomorrow.

Brush Up

Posted on June 8, 2010March 27, 2015

Ahhh… A day not spent on horseback. Victoria and I made some lists and plans for the wedding… and gathered up some of the ribbons and decorations we’ve purchased along the way… We still need to make some arrangements and go up to the site and make some more lists.  We talked cake, how much,…

English Shadow

Posted on May 6, 2010January 8, 2015

Honestly… He lives for me. He watches for me. He is dejected when I’m not around. He howls when I leave and he can’t go. He wants to crawl in my lap and snuggle. He knows I can find that *spot*. He has me wrapped around his paw. His fourth birthday was last week, and…

Sore

Posted on April 26, 2010January 9, 2015

OK. Sore. Sore. <groan> I am so ready for a soak in a hot tub… but I don’t own one. It’s not that we traveled a lot of distance as the crow flies… it was like six or seven miles total crow distance… or that we kicked hundreds of pairs out… it was more like…

Elsa’s Day at Work

Posted on April 22, 2010March 26, 2015

Yesterday’s work totaled enough photos I just decided to make you a slideshow… Remember this is from my angle atop Panama… so his ears are in almost every shot! The black Aussie is, of course, Boomer… The border collie is Sam, Johnny’s dog. And Elsa… re-haired after blowing her coat after her last litter… and…

Agility

Posted on April 18, 2010January 9, 2015

While Victoria, Matt, Jazz, and Sadie were here… we decided to play a little agility one morning. Sadie learned about the chute… She caught on quickly… She’d circle the chute on her own… and even after we quit… she’d do a few extra loops… and then she settled down. Inside the chute! Then it was…

Hiking

Posted on April 10, 2010January 9, 2015

Wyoming springtime produced the perfect day today. No snow. No wind. No hovering grey clouds. So after a brilliant morning of straightening the house and actually training, yes, training on my three English Shepherds, and cooking lunch, I took off on a hike! The plan was multifold… get the dogs and I some serious sunshine…

What’s in Front

Posted on April 2, 2010January 9, 2015

Today was incremental in its rise in temperature… but the sun was out, and though the slight breeze held a chill, people and calves both appreciated the lack of wet snow coming down sideways!  This was a WET snow, and as it slowly retreated throughout the day, sure enough, the green grass below it is…

Carol, Wyoming rancher

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
