Work

Posted on December 14, 2021December 14, 2021

We gathered the calves today. The girls will be headed to a feedlot outside of Worland to laze around and eat… they’ll be there all winter, basically just growing up. The boys will stay around, at least for now. Since they are all together, we gathered them up, trailed them home, sorted, then loaded them…

A Little Early

Posted on December 13, 2021December 13, 2021

A while back, Vernon, of course, wanted to know what I wanted for my birthday/Christmas. It’s often difficult to find something… because a) I have just about everything I want b) at least the stuff that won’t set you back tons of $$$ (like new windows in the house). He’s the same way… he’d take…

Tracking

Posted on December 12, 2021December 12, 2021

A little bit of snow makes for good tracking. It’s not a common skill like it was a century ago… but you don’t have to be that good to see if a cow has walked by! Vernon and I made one last trip to the Mesa Pasture to make sure no cows were left behind……

Do Ranchers Still Exist? Video

Posted on December 11, 2021December 11, 2021

I tried some predictive text… do ranchers… ???? I was surprised to see “still exist” as one of the answers. Yes, Virginia, ranchers still exist. This video covers October 17 through November 1, 2021.

Soft Winter Day

Posted on December 10, 2021December 10, 2021

Finally. Snow. Cold. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! It currently is 1˚. Vernon and I have a bet how cold it will get on this clear night… I think I’ve probably already lost! With no cloud cover to hold the heat in, it is going to be crisp in the morning. I…

Posted on December 9, 2021December 9, 2021

This was first posted December 9, 2010. I miss these Q and A’s! Let’s jump right in… the water’s… uh.  Frozen.  Oh, well. Laura wrote:
Do you ever get attached to the cows and are sorry to see them go? Generally, we don’t get attached to them enough as adults to be sad when they leave….

Inventive

Posted on December 7, 2021December 7, 2021

After lunch, Vernon hung around the house for a while, waiting for a phone call. When it didn’t come, he decided he’d make a quick run out to the Mills Pasture to work on the fence. I tagged along… looking for a nature fix. Our first stop was a section of fence I hadn’t seen….

Silent Auction/Open House

Posted on December 6, 2021December 6, 2021

It was a packed house. Over one hundred people attended the library’s Open House/Silent Auction, which for a town of just over 200, is pretty dog gone good. There was plenty of good food and wassail. Craig Johnson, New York Times best selling author of the Longmire Mystery Series, regaled us with his Christmas short…

Just Us

Posted on December 5, 2021December 5, 2021

I should have done so many things today… but I didn’t. It was grey, overcast, windy, and snowy at times and the temperature plummeted rapidly. It’s been unusually warm and mild, and we need the snow and the moisture it brings. It is December… Unfortunately, it didn’t bring much snow, but it still made you…

Entry

Posted on December 3, 2021December 3, 2021

Like yesterday’s post about the Festival of Trees entry, today our entry for this year’s festival was set up. This cute little tree shaped chair boasts white lights on the back, Santa ornaments edge the tree chair, with Santa’s hat and cowboy boots nearby. “Snowy days and warm hearts” is a sign on the front….

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
