Spoon Break

Posted on March 4, 2018

I’ve put some of my wood burned spoons over in Worland at Bee Healthy.  It’s a cute food/health/gift store right on main street. I’m still having fun burning these little things…

Knuckling Under

Posted on March 3, 2018

While you might think of the phrase, “knuckling under”, as a synonym for giving up or surrendering, during calving season, that means something else. This little twin has the condition we call Knuckling Under. Her front hooves are bending under instead of letting her walk normally. Give her a couple of days, and those ligaments…

#TBT: Long Gone

Posted on March 2, 2018

Today’s #tbt picture is from the 1980’s… The thing that stood out to me besides the neighbor’s Hereford cattle, was the barn.  This barn now is nothing but a few bottom boards.  It slowly collapsed in over the years, weighed down by winter snow and time. We still help our neighbor at this corral, but…

A Calf Is Born

Posted on February 27, 2018

This video covers one of heifers, number 660, and the process of having her calf.  We noticed her standing off from the herd, holding her tail out in a kinked position… an almost sure sign that labor pains have started.  We walk her into our calving shed, spreading new straw in a pen.  We would…

Calving

Posted on February 26, 2018February 25, 2018

I abandoned housework today for the calving shed.  I helped clean and re-bed pens, made ear tags, sorted and kicked out pairs, and took an abundance of photos and movies, including two with births! I’ll start with these… just because!

Working Together

Posted on February 25, 2018February 25, 2018

Victoria and her boys visited for a bit, and there was no doubt that we would go “help” with calving.  Matthew, aged two, was fairly insistent we go see “baby cows”. Not to disappoint, the calving shed was bursting with babies, their moms, and two in the process! We clean each pen between births, and…

Calving Season

Posted on February 24, 2018

We came home from California to calving season!  It’s been going full steam ahead, oftentimes our calving shed pens are full and they have to shuffle pairs around to fit everyone in! I’ve only managed to help out a couple of times due to library work and company. There’s nothing like seeing these babies, though!…

Last Half

Posted on February 21, 2018February 20, 2018

Here’s another short video, showing off the end of our trip… An evening at Freight and Salvage with the bluegrass band of Mr. Sun… a country trip to Sonoma with mission history, winery, and vineyards.  A tiny dose of the interesting vegetation… and a cold return to Wyoming! A BIG THANK YOU to my sister-and-brother-in-law…
