Waiting

Posted on January 15, 2018January 14, 2018

Normally, after gathering our cows from the badlands, we would be sorting them… Early calvers from later ones… And vaccinating with scour guard vaccine that they could pass along to their unborn calves… But we’re not. Our corrals are icy.  Built on a slight incline, which is great for drainage, it makes for a tricky…

Gathering

Posted on January 13, 2018

To everything there is a season… Sometimes they move around a bit on the calendar, but this year, we got the full use of our badlands BLM allotment.  The BLM regulates how many cattle, which pasture, and how long you can graze on these public lands. Today, the guys worked on gathering our cattle off…

#TBT: Snow Cowboy

Posted on January 12, 2018January 11, 2018

I took this photo a few years ago.  I was reminded of it as the snow poured down with this latest storm.  I watched as it sifted down six or seven inches in Ten Sleep, while I worked, warm and dry, in the library. I know, though, that there were farmers and ranchers out in…

Big Trails Natural Beef

Posted on January 10, 2018January 9, 2018

For the past few years, Brandon and Megan have owned Big Trails Natural Beef.  Their small, personal herd has provided them with an outlet for grass fed and grass finished beef.  They deliver locally when the beef is processed.  Feel free to follow them on Facebook! Recently, they also took the leap into a website…

More Work

Posted on January 9, 2018

I’m working more at the library.  Its construction is moving right along, and we have many challenges to meet. We’re continuing the After the Bell program, though I’ve backed off on the detailed activities and settled for chess tournaments and the like! It is the future planning that is getting to us now… Will the…

New Home

Posted on January 8, 2018January 7, 2018

We decided to send some of our heifers that we bangs vaccinated yesterday over to a feedlot.  Normally, we would feed them ourselves in a corral throughout the winter and into spring when we AI them.  This year, we’re mixing things up! We loaded them up… Then dropped them off in their new home. They…

Required

Posted on January 7, 2018

We spent the day doing the required bangs vaccination of our young heifer calves. The Good Doctor and some helpers were on hand. He has his own tattoo he must place in the ear as proof of vaccination as well as a numbered orange button tag.  By the end of the day, green tattoo ink…

Carol, Wyoming rancher

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
